Great Works Bridge Receives Grant from the Fabulous Find!

The Great Works Bridge Brigade received an $8,382 grant from The Fabulous Find Resale Boutique. This generous gift will help cover planning costs associated with building a covered, timber–frame bridge to span the Great Works River in the heart of South Berwick’s historic town center.

“We are so grateful to the Fabulous Find for having faith in us and being such a wonderful resource for local nonprofits,” says Ginny Alterio-Smith, a member of the Brigade. “They’ve created a ‘generosity exchange’ in which people can contribute household treasures, shoppers can find tremendous deals, and everyone can feel better knowing that all profits go to making the Seacoast a better place to live.”

The Great Works Bridge will replace an existing structure that was condemned by the state of Maine in 2007 and is slated for removal in 2018.

Bridge Model on the Move!

After spending some time with the fine folks at Price Point Eyewear, our bridge model has found a new home at Outlook Tavern! When you get a chance, stop by. You'll get a terrific view of the greens outside and inside you can check out the model of South Berwick's newest landmark in the making. Thanks to Jim Flynn for hosting us for the summer and to Jeff Maldoni for keeping an eye on it. It takes a village to build a bridge.

Wonderful news! The Great Works Bridge project has received the endorsement of the Timber Framers Guild (TFG).When fundraising for South Berwick's new bridge is complete, it will become a TFG Community Building Project. Through these projects, skilled Guild instructors work with volunteers from near and far to create a timber framed structure for the sponsoring community.

“These projects are true partnerships,” says Dan Boyle, a member of the Great Works Bridge Brigade and the Guild. “They bring communities together with determined volunteers to create unforgettable experiences and lasting community landmarks.”

Since the first project in 1989, the Guild has built nearly 80 structures across North America and abroad. Their portfolio includes a covered bridge Guelph, Ontario and another over the Kicking Horse River in Golden, British Columbia.

In South Berwick, they will help to build a covered, timber–frame bridge to span the Great Works River at Leigh’s Mill Pond in the heart of the community’s historic district and close to the site of the first water-powered sawmill in North America.

“Both the physical beauty and the historic importance of the site impressed me—no doubt a new pedestrian bridge will be a treasure for the community,” says Jeff Arvin, the Guild’s Executive Director. “On behalf of the Guild, we look forward to establishing a rewarding partnership.”

Fabulous Find Picks the Bridge for May Donation!

Exciting news! The truly Fabulous Find Resale Boutique has selected the Great Works Bridge Brigade as one of their May 2017 recipients!

The Fabulous Find has donated more than $1,000,000 to local nonprofits since it opened in 2010. All of the May profits from this delightful resale boutique will go to the Bridge Brigade, the Hospice Help Foundation, and Patrick Dorow Productions. The more sales they make, the bigger the checks awarded at the end of May.

That’s where we come in. Everyone who supports the Great Works Bridge can increase their sales by donating gently used items and by shopping throughout the month. We also can encourage all of our family and friends do the same!

The Find accepts clothing, jewelry, home décor and furniture, books and more. (Children’s toys, baby equipment, and electronics are not accepted for safety and disposal reasons.)

Please also consider attending a reception at 8:30 am on the morning of Saturday, May 6th when they will introduce our project to staff and customers and award donations to April recipients.

The Fabulous Find is located at 139 State Rd (Route One) in Kittery. Store Hours: Monday through Saturday, 9:30–5:30; Sunday, 11:00–4:00.

Drop by Price Point on Maine Street to Check Out the Model!

Where o where has our bridge model gone? All eyes should be on Price Point Eyewear. Big, big thank you to Paul and Alex Vasapoli for hosting the model created by Lassel Architects PA. Not only is Price Point a great local business that provides a valuable (and very cost effective) service for our town, they share our "vision" for the future. And if you promise to go downtown to have a look, we'll stop making puns.

Town Council Approval!

On January 10, 2017, the Town Council unanimously endorsed the concept of a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge across the Great Works River on Vine Street. They agreed to collaborate with the GWBB in all aspects of project planning, permitting and construction of the new bridge. Many thanks to the Council for this vote of confidence. Together we can do this! You can read more about Council's decision at Seacoast Online.

Lassel Architects Inspire

Lassel Architects PA gave the brigade exactly what we wanted for the holidays—an exactingly handcrafted model of the preliminary design! Just what we needed to inspire all of us to work toward making our dream a reality. Many thanks to Mike Lassel for sponsoring this contribution, to Fred Wildnauer for contributing the handcrafted pieces, and to Michal Kaletafor his remarkable skill and effort to bring it all together.
